Overview

The United Arab Emirates has emerged as one of the most ambitious new spacefaring nations over the past decade. The UAE Space Agency, founded in 2014, and the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) have rapidly developed indigenous capability across Earth observation, planetary science, and satellite communications. The Emirates' space strategy is closely tied to its broader economic diversification goals under UAE Vision 2031.

Key Satellites & Missions

Hope Mars Orbiter (Al Amal): Launched in July 2020, Hope entered Mars orbit in February 2021, making the UAE the first Arab nation and fifth entity globally to reach Mars. The spacecraft studies the Martian atmosphere and weather patterns, contributing data to the international Mars science community.

KhalifaSat: The UAE's first fully domestically built Earth observation satellite, launched in 2018. Provides high-resolution imagery (0.7m panchromatic) for environmental monitoring, urban planning, and disaster response across the Middle East and beyond.

MBZ-Sat: A next-generation Earth observation satellite launched in 2024 with improved resolution and AI-powered onboard processing, named after UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed.

Thuraya: A mobile satellite communications company headquartered in Abu Dhabi, operating GEO satellites providing voice and data services across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.

Al Yah: GEO communications satellites operated by Yahsat (now part of Space42), providing broadband and government services across the Middle East, Africa, and South America.

Future Ambitions

The UAE has announced ambitious plans for an asteroid belt mission (Emirates Mission to the Asteroid Belt, targeting a 2028 launch) that would visit seven asteroids and land on one. The country is also investing in space manufacturing, smallsat constellations, and space economy infrastructure. The UAE's national space fund targets growing the space sector to contribute AED 10 billion annually to the economy.

International Partnerships

The UAE works closely with NASA, JAXA, and the European Space Agency on scientific collaboration. Emirati astronauts have flown to the International Space Station via SpaceX Crew Dragon, including Sultan Al Neyadi's six-month mission in 2023.
