Why There Is No Live View of Your House

The idea sounds reasonable: thousands of satellites carry cameras, so surely one of them can show your street right now. The reason none of them can comes down to orbital mechanics, and it is the same physics that shapes everything else in Earth orbit.

Imaging satellites fly in low Earth orbit, a few hundred kilometres up, because that is the only place a camera can resolve fine detail. At that altitude a satellite moves at roughly 7.6 km per second and circles the planet in about 90 minutes. From the ground, it crosses your entire sky in a few minutes. It physically cannot hover over your house: nothing in low orbit can stay above one point on Earth, and a camera that sweeps past at orbital speed can only take snapshots of a narrow strip of ground as it goes.

The one place a satellite can stare at the same spot is geostationary orbit, 35,786 km above the equator, where the orbital period matches Earth's rotation. Weather satellites sit there and image the same hemisphere continuously. That is the live satellite view of Earth that genuinely exists, and it is spectacular, but at that distance one pixel covers hundreds of metres to kilometres of ground. Your house, your street, and most of your town fit inside a single pixel.

There is also a practical layer on top of the physics. Commercial imaging satellites do not photograph continuously: they are tasked, pointing their cameras at ordered targets along their track, and the images they capture are downlinked when the satellite next passes a ground station, then processed. Even a freshly tasked image of your neighbourhood typically takes hours to reach a customer. A continuous live feed of one fixed address would require capabilities that no commercial or civil system provides, and the sky-high data volumes would serve almost no one: which is why nobody has built it.

How Old Is the Satellite View in Mapping Apps?

The satellite layer in mapping apps is a patchwork of archival imagery: high-resolution aerial survey photos over cities, satellite imagery elsewhere, stitched together from captures made at different times. In densely populated areas it is typically refreshed every one to three years. Rural and remote areas wait longer. So the picture of your house is not from this morning: it is usually somewhere between several months and several years old.

You can normally verify this yourself: the capture date, or at least the year, is printed in the imagery credit line at the edge of the map view. If the sharpest view of your street looks better than 30 cm per pixel, you are almost certainly looking at aerial photography taken from an aircraft, not from orbit.

What Can a Satellite Actually See?

Satellite imaging is described by ground resolution: the size of the smallest patch of ground that fills one pixel. The sharpest commercial systems reach about 30 cm per pixel. Legal limits and physics keep consumer-accessible imagery at roughly that level, and looking through hundreds of kilometres of atmosphere sets hard limits of its own. Note what is missing from that table: people. At 30 cm per pixel a person is two or three pixels seen from directly above, a dot with a shadow. Faces are physically impossible from orbit, and a licence plate is both far below the resolution limit and mounted vertically, edge-on to any satellite camera. Movie scenes that zoom from orbit to a readable newspaper are fiction, and remain fiction even for classified systems: the atmosphere itself blurs any optical view from space beyond roughly the 10 cm class, no matter how large the telescope.
