Touching the Sun

Parker Solar Probe is the fastest and closest human-made object to the Sun. During perihelion it passes within 6.1 million km of the solar surface at speeds exceeding 690,000 km/h — fast enough to travel from New York to Tokyo in under a minute. The mission uses repeated Venus gravity assists to gradually shrink its orbit.

Surviving the Heat

The spacecraft's 11.4 cm carbon-composite heat shield faces temperatures exceeding 1,370°C while keeping instruments at a comfortable 30°C. Parker is studying the solar corona, the origin of the solar wind, and the mechanisms that accelerate energetic particles to near-light speed.
