An analyst object is a piece of orbiting hardware that surveillance analysts track and maintain an orbit for, but that hasn't been formally catalogued — usually because its origin can't be pinned to a specific launch or breakup. They historically carry temporary numbers in the 80000-series range.

Why origin is the hard requirement
Maintaining an orbit is a solved problem given observations; explaining an object is detective work. Attribution matters because the catalogue is not merely a tracking aid — it underpins the international registration regime (states are responsible for their space objects under the Registration Convention) and the statistical record of debris-generating events. Admitting an object without origin would mean recording mass in orbit that no state owns and no event explains. So analysts hold such objects aside while correlating their orbits backwards in time against launch histories and known breakups — work that occasionally reattributes decades-old fragments when a match finally closes.
The analyst list as a debris census gap-filler
The formal catalogue undercounts the debris environment, historically limited to objects roughly 10 cm and larger in LEO that meet the attribution bar. The analyst population fills part of the gap — smaller or unexplained objects revealed by sensitive sensors such as the Space Fence — and its size is itself a data point: growth in unattributed objects signals either improving sensors or an environment shedding fragments faster than forensics can keep up. Environment modellers combine catalogued, analyst and statistically sampled populations to estimate the true count, which for millimetre-scale debris runs into the millions.
